CAPTURE THE ACTION WITH THE MOST ADVANCED FILM TECHNOLOGIES

Jebsen Industrial helps Beijing 2008 filmmakers to Olympic Gold

Jebsen Industrial delivered a gold medal-worthy performance, drawing on its market know-how, technical expertise, and logistics leadership to supply and support advanced film and lighting technologies for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Challenge: Capturing the Olympics on Film

The 2008 Olympics was more than just the an important and high-profile sporting event. With the eyes of the world on Beijing, it was also a perfect opportunity to showcase China’s rich history and progressive present.

Those charged with capturing the 16-day event on film included The Beijing Film Academy and China Newsreel & Documentary Film Studio, which created the official film of Beijing 2008. Their goal was to ensure that Beijing 2008 recorded to the very highest international standards. They thus needed the world's best equipment, delivered on time in Beijing, along with a crew trained to use it, and people and parts to support it.

The Solution: Win-Win for Filmmakers, Broadcast Partners, and Supplier
Jebsen Industrial was uniquely able to help China create a perfect record of the Games.

As a leading supplier to the film and broadcast sector in China over many years, Jebsen Industrial is respected nationwide as an industry pioneer. It is also the trusted partner of Germany’s ARRI Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of motion picture camera, digital intermediate and lighting equipment, representing it in Greater China since the 1960s.

“Drawing on our unique understanding of the film industry in China, and our strong relationships with key industry players and with ARRI, Jebsen Industrial was thus able to bring customers and supplier together in support of the Beijing Games. Crucially, though, we were also able to deliver and support the advanced ARRI equipment chosen by these customers, despite the challenges of hectic pre-Games logistics and the demands of filming the Games themselves,” explained Mr Lorenz Zimmermann, Director of Jebsen Industrial.

Advanced Technologies from the World Leader
The sophisticated ARRI camera and lighting solutions recommended by Jebsen Industrial and used during Beijing 2008 included:
  • The advanced ARRIFLEX D-21 film-style digital camera, and the versatile ARRIFLEX 416 Plus HS high-speed 16mm camera; and
  • State-of-the-art lighting solutions from the ARRISUN, ARRI Fresnel, ARRILUX Pocket PAR, and ARRI Compact product ranges.

Logistics Brilliance and Dedicated Technical Support

The pre-Games period presented exceptional logistics challenges. Jebsen Industrial had a thorough understanding of the customs and transportation arrangements put in place especially for the Games.

With special permits granted and new regulations adhered to, Jebsen Industrial was able to ensure that the ARRIFLEX D-21 digital camera reached Beijing on Aug 5, 2008, just three days before its clients needed to film the spectacular Beijing 2008 Opening Ceremony.

It then hosted the ARRI trainer, Director of Photography Manuel Wenger, and helped him conduct an intense ARRIFLEX D-21 training session for 25 members of the Official Olympic Film Project crew. Furthermore, Jebsen Industrial provided technical support throughout the Games, with a qualified engineer stationed on-site at the “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium during the Opening Ceremony, for example.

“With the support of Jebsen Industrial, our partner in China, our ARRI technology was there to allow China’s talented filmmakers to capture and preserve highly detailed images of the historic Opening Ceremony and the spectacular sporting achievements that were the hallmark of Beijing 2008,” said the representative from ARRI.

The official film of Beijing 2008 is now housed in the archives of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland as a permanent record of the 2008 Games.
