The Challenge: Equipping China’s Vehicle Testing Sector

 

Vehicle crash safety testing is crucial to automotive manufacturers’ research and development (R&D) programs. It is also an indispensible tool for third-party agencies that evaluate vehicles against strict standards, such as the China New Car Assessment Programme (C-NCAP) and its US and European counterparts.

 

Vehicle testing laboratories use highly sensitive and sophisticated equipment and advanced technologies, including state-of-the-art lighting systems. Specialist lighting is necessary to ensure the visual quality of the high-speed photography that is essential to the vehicle testing process.

China’s Most Advanced Vehicle Safety Lab

 

Founded in 1997 as a 50-50 joint venture between General Motors (GM) and Shanghai Automotive Group Co. (SAIC), PATAC provides automotive engineering services including design, development, testing and validation of components and vehicles. Its 180,000-square-meter campus in Pudong, Shanghai, comprises numerous world-class labs and test chambers. It serves GM, SAIC and other automakers from China and the Asia Pacific.

 

In March 2009, PATAC opened one of the world’s largest and most advanced vehicle safety R&D centres. Built to GM’s global standards at a total investment of RMB 150 million, the facility features a whole-vehicle safety lab, sled impact test lab, and sub-system safety test lab. It has 33 high-speed cameras, 27 crash test dummies, complete modules for pedestrian protection testing, and an ARRI lighting system designed and supplied by Jebsen Industrial.

The Solution: Complete Lighting Solution

 

Jebsen Industrial proposed a complete lighting solution that met PATAC’s technical requirements and its need for efficient and cost-effective deployment. The solution was based around  ARRI lighting products designed especially for vehicle safety labs, including the ARRISUN Industrial PAR (Parabolic Aluminum Reflector) lampheads and ARRI compact flood lights.

 

 ARRI, a German company founded in 1917, is considered the world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced cameras, lighting systems, and digital intermediate equipment.

For PATAC, Jebsen Industrial liaised with  ARRI and several domestic suppliers to deliver a complete solution that included lighting equipment, lighting control systems, electrical systems, bridge design and related structural drawings. This enabled technical and design efficiencies that achieved a 20% cost saving compared to initial project estimates. Jebsen Industrial also provided installation support and held four training sessions for PATAC staff.

 

PATAC awarded the lighting contract to Jebsen Industrial in early 2008, with the installation complete by the third quarter of that year in time for the lab to officially open in March 2009. A team of ten experts from Jebsen Industrial supported PATAC throughout the project.

Exceptional Technical Capabilities

 

The Jebsen Industrial- ARRI lighting solution was selected because it offered optimum light output and flicker-free performance, stability, reliability and durability. It also exceeded PATAC’s expectations by delivering high illumination and cost effectiveness:

 

  • Optimum illumination: The lab’s basic requirement was for illuminance of 60,000 lux, which could ensure quality recording from its high-speed cameras. This lux level was provided by  ARRI PAR lamps of 4000/8000 watts and luminous flux of 80-90 lumens per watt. These lampheads utilize OSRAM HMI gas discharge lamps and have a colour index of more than 90, which ensures stable light output, and consistent colour temperature.

 

  • Stability and reliability: The  ARRI lamps’ light source is a metal halide lamp with very high luminous efficiency. In combination with the optical system designed for PATAC, this ensured exceptional lamp efficiency and no distortion over long periods in real operating conditions.

 

  • Light boosting: The ARRI lampheads have electronic flicker-free boost ballasts that double their illumination to 120,000 lux. Designed for high-speed photography, the boost ballets also save energy and help to extend lamphead life.

Supporting the Vehicle Testing Industry


Since its cooperation with PATAC in 2008, Jebsen Industrial has completed several major projects for new and existing automotive safety labs. Changchun Automotive Test Center: Changchun Automotive Test Center (CATC) is an authorized "National Automobile Quality Supervision and Inspection Center" that offers a wide array of testing and calibration services. Jebsen Industrial designed and supplied the lighting system for a new CATC facility and to upgrade two existing test labs. Its technically superior solution was based on ARRI PAR lamps and included lighting control systems, electrical systems, configuration design and related structural drawings. This project was complete in 2009.
BYD Auto Crash and Safety Laboratory: Built with an investment of nearly RMB 200 million, the new BYD automotive safety lab in Shenzhen is an advanced facility that supports R&D of electric and hybrid vehicles. It has three main labs, involved in vehicle collision testing, collision simulation and pedestrian protection respectively. Jebsen Industrial was entrusted to design the lighting system and supply the necessary equipment for these new labs. To ensure efficiency, it stationed a team of more than ten technical experts at the BYD site for six months from mid-2013. After implementation, Jebsen Industrial conducted training for lab staff, with on-going maintenance support included.
