Prosumer products, professional results

JCineCast proves that ‘Getting the Film Look’ is possible for prosumers and mid-to-low budget filmmakers through a new seminar series

While Jebsen Industrial has traditionally served the professional film and media industry, it recognises that with the changing times, more prosumer filmmakers and budget productions are keen on achieving high production value results. This is adding greater diversity and vibrancy to the local film industry, which Jebsen Industrial is keen on supporting.

Under its JCineCast brand, Jebsen Industrial’s Cinematic & Broadcasting Solutions Division has successfully debuted a new seminar series titled ‘Getting the Film Look’. The informative, hands-on events were designed specifically for filmmaking enthusiasts, independent filmmakers, mini-production, budget producers as well as the film equipment rental companies that serve them. Held in Hong Kong (March 19), Shanghai (March 21) and Nanjing (March 23), the seminar proved that, even without a big budget, participants could ‘get the film look’ with simply the right equipment and techniques.

An experiential event

In addition to learning expert tips from speakers like Mr Arato Ogura from Zeiss, over 180 participants were given the opportunity to personally handle leading industry equipment like the Canon DSLR, Sony Mirrorless and Panasonic MFT cameras fitted with lenses, filters and other accessories. These included Bright Tangerine matte boxes,
DENZ follow-focus, rigs and adaptors, Lowel lights, Schneider lenses and filters, Tiffen filters, walimex pro cages and follow-focus as well as Zeiss lenses, among others.

The events also invited local DOPs to share their shooting experiences with participants—Mr Wang Xin and Mr Ricky Zhang in Shanghai, Mr Makin Fung (Senior Lecturer, The Open University of Hong Kong) and Mr Francis So (cinematographer and time-lapse artist) in Hong Kong and Datou in Nanjing.

JCineCast also prepared a café scene for live shoots so that participants could create different visual results themselves. This allowed participants to immediately put into practice the tips they had picked up earlier, especially on cine lens application and modern filter effects. JCineCast made available dozens of different filters from three manufacturers to ensure a rewarding experience for participants.

Interacting with industry experts

At all three events, participants also heard directly from a panel of experts, including representatives from Zeiss and JCineCast. In Hong Kong, where a morning session was held specifically for undergraduates from five local film universities, this was a cherished opportunity to learn from industry experts. Feedback from the 50 students were highly positive, with many sharing that they gained tremendous insights from the sharing.

This was followed by an afternoon session attended by 60 filmmaking enthusiasts, independent commercial producers and more.

“This was our first foray into engaging the prosumer segment and I am delighted that the seminars were well received. As we strive to achieve our vision of ‘Capturing Beyond Limits’, we will continue to engage and add value to both the professional and prosumer segment with our multi-brand, multi-channel approach,” said Mr Philbert Chin, General Manager of Cinematic and Broadcasting Solutions, Jebsen Industrial.
