BRINGING FRENCH HERBS TO GREATER CHINA

Lush and beautiful, the French region of Milly-la-Forêt has been a home and inspiration to luminaries like fashion designer Christian Dior and French playwright Jean Cocteau. The fertile land is also where Mr Amand Darbonne founded Darégal Gourmet in 1887 to cultivate medicinal plants and cooking herbs. Darégal comes from the Darbonne last name and the French word ‘régal’, meaning ‘feast’.

Five generations and more than 120 years later, the Darbonne family is still the proud owner of DarégalGourmet, which feeds the world with ready-to-use, fresh frozen chopped herbs. The brand’s focus on frozen herbs stems from a simple problem—everyone enjoys the flavour of fresh herbs but inconvenience and cost have made it difficult to have fresh herbs all year round.

About 30 years ago, Darégal found an innovative solution to this issue. It invented a totally unique preservative-free process for freezing and chopping herbs. Its IQF technology ensures that the natural flavour and aroma of its herbs are carefully preserved. For food safety and quality assurance, Darégal grows its own herbs and has a strict HACCP system in place. Only tender leaves are washed, chopped and packaged into an easy-to-use form, and shipped to kitchens around the world. Darégal has an extensive product line of over 40 delicious fresh frozen herbs, each with a shelf life of three years.

The French brand has chosen Jebsen Industrial as its partner in Greater China, recognising the value of Jebsen Industrial’s deep market understanding, extensive distribution network and food innovation expertise. Together, they hope to add greater flavour to Chinese kitchens in a safe and delicious, convenient and cost-efficient way.

From Europe to the world

Beginning in France, Darégal has won over Europe with its passion for herbs. Basil, for example, is regarded as the king of herbs and widely used in European cooking. After extensive R&D, Darégal has developed as many as five basil products to cater to different palates. It is little wonder that its herbs are equally well loved by consumers as well as F&B industry professionals in Europe.

To bring herbs to the US market, Darégal chose to collaborate with spice and herb company McCormick. The joint venture led to the birth of a sub-brand, SupHerb, which soon became a major player in the industry. It is with this respect for food culture and spirit of innovation that Darégal made its entry into China. It has even developed an Asian inspired line that includes the L'Orientale sauce, which is flavoured with cumin—a familiar herb in Chinese cooking.
