COMPETING IN CHINA’S COMPETITIVE FILM INDUSTRY

Jebsen Industrial gives local filmmakers an edge with a suite of world-class solutions

China is set to be the fastest-growing market for film entertainment in the world, according to consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. The results were released in its Global Entertainment & Media Outlook: 2013-2017 report, which estimated that China will see 14.7% growth against a global average of just 3.6%. While this is welcome news for the domestic film industry as a whole, individual players are beginning to feel the heat of competition.

In 2013, only four of the top 10 grossing films in China were Hollywood productions. Domestic films are steadily gaining popularity but they must still jostle for every dollar as savvy Chinese consumers take their pick from a growing list of entertainment options.

Under the pressure of these market forces, local filmmakers need to deliver higher-quality visual experiences but shrinking budgets are making it difficult for them to bear the hefty price tag of technology. Jebsen Industrial, as a key player in the evolution of the Chinese film and media industry, seeks to deliver game-changing technology in a way that offers maximum value for local filmmakers.

The value of relationships

The success of this approach has been acknowledged by ANGENIEUX, who presented JEBSEN INDUSTRIAL with the “Best Distributor Global Award of 2013” at its annual NAB party on April 8, 2014 in Las Vegas, USA.

Take Angenieux lenses, for example. Solutions from the French lens technology leader, who is also famed as the long-term Official Partner of the Cannes Film Festival, have been available to local filmmakers for close to dozens of years, thanks to Jebsen Industrial’s relationship with the brand. By bundling Angenieux lenses with localised consultancy services and technical advice, Jebsen Industrial has been able to deliver value to the industry – and, solidify Angenieux ’s presence locally. The success of this approach has been acknowledged by Angenieux , who presented Jebsen Industrial with the “Best Distributor Global Award of 2013” at its annual NAB party on April 8, 2014 in Las Vegas, USA. The award is a measure of Jebsen Industrial’s performance on numerous fronts including sales performance, market exposure and service.

The value of quality

Schneider-Kreuznach Cine-Xenar III lenses are the tool for your creativity. Schneider lenses have the speed, image quality and robust reliable construction to give you the maximum freedom to pursue your vision.

Quality is a key consideration when Jebsen Industrial curates its offerings for the Greater China market but cost-effectiveness is just as important。Schneider-Kreuznach Cine-Xenar III lenses fit the bill perfectly, which explains its popularity among local filmmakers. Its performance was put to the test by two cinematographers, and passed with flying colours.

“The Cine-Xenar III has a really good macro quality. We had many scenes involving diamonds and close-up shots so we had intended to rent a macro lens – until we realised the amazing macro quality of the Cine-Xenar III. From a production perspective, it saved us money and, by being able to take a shot right up to the subject, it raised our production efficiency as well,” said A’Dijiang, the man behind the camera of Chinese drama serial ‘Three Queens’.

For Li Wei, the cinematographer of another Chinese drama serial ‘Police Woman’, the variety of focal lengths that Schneider-Kreuznach Cine-Xenar III lenses come in is a bonus. “For me, the Cine-Xenar III lenses are quite comprehensive. In particular, the 75mm and 95mm focal lengths are really suitable for me when I film with double cameras. There were no visible flaws in image quality and given its price point, it has delivered on our expectations.”

The value of speed

ARRI AMIRA is hardy and suitable for a variety of production types, from reportage and corporate films to TV drama and low-budget movies.

With technology evolving at the speed of light, keeping the domestic film and media industry equipped with the best and latest is a responsibility that Jebsen Industrial takes seriously. Earlier this year, its excellent relationship with Angenieux secured Jebsen Industrial the world’s first shipment of Angenieux Optimo Anamorphic zoom lenses – giving Chinese filmmakers a global head-start.

Now, with ARRI’s AMIRA documentary-style cameras beginning the shipping soon, Jebsen Industrial is set to bring this to Chinese filmmakers as well. Ready to pick up and shoot straight out of the camera bag, AMIRA is hardy and suitable for a variety of production types, from reportage and corporate films to TV drama and low-budget movies. As local filmmakers grapple with lower budgets and tighter production schedules, Jebsen Industrial anticipates that the AMIRA will be a welcome solution.
