The film took in more than US.8 million in its first three days of release, including nearly US million its first day, which is a record for a 2-D Chinese film according to state-run media. The film is based on a hit reality television series of the same name, which locked in 600 million viewers when it first hit airwaves in October 2013. The show features five celebrity fathers (Taiwanese singer-turned-actor Lin Zhiying, film director Wang Yuelun, former diver and Olympic gold-medalist Tian Liang, actor Guo Tao and model Zhang Liang) learning to care for their young children, aged three to six, while completing a variety of outdoor missions.

To set the film apart from the television series, the production crew was determined to create a visually stunning piece of work. With the film partly set in the Chimelong Safari Park of southern Guangzhou, which spans one million square metres, a massive production crew numbering over 500 people were involved behind the scenes. Onsite filming equipment alone was valued at over RMB 20 million, featuring 23 of the latest ARRI ALEXA cameras to capture the cast’s candid interactions and high-end aerial cameras to do justice to the park’s scenic beauty.

Onsite filming with ARRI ALEXA

The production crew opted for the latest generation of ARRI ALEXA cameras, known to the global industry as the most complete and powerful digital production system. Distributed by Jebsen Industrial in China and supplied by Beijing Star Film & Television Equipment, the ALEXA offers a full image processing pipeline with speedy workflow. Image quality is rated to be close to 35mm film, giving the film the documentary-style visual effects that the production crew desired. The ALEXA’s lightweight and durable characteristics also made it perfect for onsite filming at the park because the unscripted nature of the movie meant that each of the five parent-child pairs had to be filmed continuously to capture every moment.

Finest focus with Alura and Angenieux lenses

The ARRI ALEXA cameras were fitted with Alura Zoom lenses, including the ARRI FUJINON Alura Zoom 45-250, Zoom 15.5-45 and more. This made the filming process much more efficient by eliminating the need to carry and swop out lenses of different focal lenses. The Alura lenses also gave the production crew more control and flexibility in arranging picture composition before shooting, delivering the wide-angle shots that the director envisioned with ease and simplicity.

The crew also relied on Angenieux ’s fixed lenses to capture many touching and close-up moments of the young children interacting with the animals. The French brand and Jebsen Industrial principal is an Oscar-winning global leader in the manufacture of precision lenses for cinema and television production.

Jebsen Industrial is proud to represent ARRI and Angenieux in China, bringing their advanced products to the domestic film and media industry as part of its complete suite of industry solutions.
