LEARNING THE ART OF STEADICAM® FILMING

A Jebsen Industrial partner for over 20 years, Tiffen has introduced China’s first Steadicam ® training programme in June this year. Steadicam ®, a revolutionary camera stabilising system that Tiffen invented in 1976, has since become an invaluable production tool in the global film and media industry. To use it to its full potential, however, training and practice is needed. This was why Jebsen Industrial collaborated with Chinese Society of Cinematographers (CSC) to bring the Steadicam ® Silver Workshop to its shores.

World-class training

The Steadicam ® Silver Workshop is a structured international programme designed and conducted by Tiffen ’s qualified instructors to equip camera operators with the skills and knowledge to use a Steadicam ® system to  effect. Working closely with Tiffen in the USA and CSC in Beijing, Jebsen Industrial hosted the workshop from June 24-29, 2014 after securing a suitable venue at the Beijing Film Academy.

In consultation with Tiffen , Jebsen Industrial advised that the workshop should be deliberately kept small so that each participant could receive ample hands-on time and one-on-one guidance from the trainers. The certified programme welcomed a full house of 12 attendees ranging from industry professionals to film and media students. Three technical specialists from Tiffen flew to China to deliver the workshop, supported by a Jebsen Industrial team that facilitated operations and ensured that the programme went without a hitch.

The lead instructor for the workshop was Mr Robin Thwaites, International Steadicam ® sales director from the UK, and the person in charge of creating workshop formats for world markets. He worked closely with Mr Wan Zhongwei, a bilingual instructor from Singapore, to deliver the session. As a working camera operator, Mr Wan uses Steadicam ® frequently and is one of the few people in Asia skilled in the Steadicam ® Tango. Mr Brett Smith, Sales Director for Tiffen / Steadicam ® in Asia Pacific, also flew in from Australia to assist the instructors.

Throughout the comprehensive course, participants were given practical training starting from the fundamentals—understanding the principles of operating a Steadicam ®, assembling it and fitting cameras and accessories, balancing the system, wearing the operator’s vest, adjusting the suspension arm and understanding rest positions. From there, they progressed to using the Steadicam ® effectively by learning to start and stop smoothly and executing various moves, including panning, tracking, circling and walking. It was also important, according to Mr Thwaites, that Steadicam ® operators understand how to work safely in adverse conditions and are able to communicate effectively with directors and clients, so these topics were also covered during the training.

Preparing China for the future

Feedback from participants after the course was very encouraging. And since Jebsen Industrial expects Steadicam ® to continue to be well received in the domestic market, it is considering organising the Steadicam ® Gold Workshop, which is an advanced training programme, in the future.

This forms part of Jebsen Industrial’s on-going efforts to raise the professional standards of the Chinese film and media industry, which also features programmes and workshops to nurture budding filmmakers and foster creative talent. Its objective is to help the domestic industry achieve a sustainable future by delivering not just world-class solutions but training as well.
