THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE

Annual Dinners are celebrations for and about people. If employees enjoy one another’s company and the work that they do, they are more likely to be enthusiastic about attending and participating in such corporate get-togethers. So while an Annual Dinner is not the most scientific way to measure employee engagement levels, it can lend some interesting insights to the workforce psyche.

Jebsen Group Annual Dinner in Hong Kong

By that token, the Jebsen spirit must be burning strong since staff arrived in full force for its Annual Dinners, held in four locations this year: Beijing on Feb 17, Shanghai on Feb 18, Guangzhou on Feb 26 and Hong Kong on Feb 28. While the dinners were held separately, they clearly shared a common theme of celebration and togetherness. Group Chairman Mr Hans Michael Jebsen attended each and every Annual Dinner, taking to the stage and addressing event halls and ballrooms packed with staff. He spoke of the business achievements of each division and shared his outlook on the future, setting a bright and optimistic tone for the rest of the evening.

Giving recognition where it is due

The celebratory feel continued with the awarding of the Jebsen Scholarships to children of staff for academic excellence. Among the proud parents named were three from Jebsen Industrial – Steven Chan (Product Manager, Engineering & Technology Division, Hong Kong), George Fu (Department Manager, Food, Beverage & Pharma Division, Beijing) and Lu Xin (Senior Sales Manager, Engineering & Technology, Beijing). Their megawatt smiles were rivalled only by those of their colleagues who received long service awards. Jebsen Industrial produced a bevy of winners who claimed awards for five, 10, 15, 20 and even 25 years of service.

Investing in prized resources

Throughout the evening, smiles continued to shine especially with the prospect of 100 lucky draw prizes waiting to be won. As a token of appreciation for the hard work and commitment of its staff, Jebsen invested in attractive giveaways that ranged from shopping and dining vouchers to the latest gadgets and smartphones. The ‘treasure chest’ was also filled with covetable products from Jebsen’s brand portfolio, including popular Dyson products and more. But according to sentiment on the ground, the three luckiest people of each evening were the ones who took home cash prizes of rather substantial amounts.

Outperforming expectations

If Annual Dinners are a corporate tradition for Jebsen, staff performances are a time-honoured practice. In Shanghai, each business unit including Jebsen Industrial fielded a team to put up a rousing song and dance show while in Guangzhou, the staff opted to showcase an elegant and graceful traditional Chinese dance. Over in Hong Kong, staff were represented by a band featuring highly talented members from different business units who rocked the stage with a medley of hit songs. The Technical Services Division, in particular, took the spotlight with five representatives – two amazing guitarists and three soaring vocalists. The performance was in keeping with the theme of the Hong Kong dinner – Jebsen Carnival: A Night in Jebsenland. Staff gamely dressed up in fun and colourful outfits while the organising committee made sure to transform the venue into a mini carnival with a magician, photo machines, popcorn, cotton candy and carnival-inspired games.

Going by the laughter that filled the air and the smiles that rarely left the people’s faces, it could be said that the Annual Dinners were met with yet another year of success. As employees now prepare to take on the challenges of 2014, Jebsen Industrial will continue to focus on staff well-being to keep its people engaged, excited and involved.
