TRAINED TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING

A company like Jebsen Industrial has diverse businesses but each is in a niche area that requires specialised market knowledge and skillsets. Recruiting the right talent as the business grows is a challenge, but the process has been made easier with a Group-level initiative. The Jebsen Trainee Programme, spearheaded by Jebsen Group, is designed to groom fresh graduates for each of the business units through two years of job rotations and structured training. Carol Liu is a recent graduate of this programme, earning herself a permanent position as E-Commerce Executive with Jebsen Industrial’s Specialty Ingredients & Solutions team.

The Jebsen Trainee Programme, spearheaded by Jebsen Group, is designed to groom fresh graduates for each of the business units through two years of job rotations and structured training.

What motivated you to join the Jebsen Trainee Programme?

I graduated from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Shanghai) in 2013. When I found out about the Jebsen Trainee Programme, I was keen to be part of it. I feel that the programme helps fresh graduates like myself kick-start our careers. It is a precious opportunity to begin a career with rotations to different job functions in different cities. Having been through the programme, I can say with certainty that the experience has been immensely beneficial in both personal and professional ways. In a short span of two years, I have gained a broad understanding of the business, experienced life and culture outside my home city and met people from all walks of life. Also, I really appreciated how the rotation plan is customised for each trainee, taking into consideration not only our academic background but also our career interests and aspirations.

Please tell us about your rotation experience.

It was very varied in terms of location (Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin), function (finance, operations, sales and marketing and supply chain) and industry (petrochemicals, nutrition and health and food ingredients). I enjoyed every moment although the most memorable part has been meeting people. In every city and every team, I have had the chance to interact and work with different people. Getting to know them and learning about local culture has been an eye-opening experience. Of all the people I met in my two years as a Jebsen Trainee, however, those who left the deepest impression have been my coaches. They have been true mentors to me, sharing lessons that they have learnt through experience through their words and actions. I am constantly inspired to do my best thanks to them.

Reflecting on those two years, I believe I have grown tremendously. I have not only gained functional knowledge that will be useful in my career but also learnt about professionalism and the importance of interpersonal skills. I have built strong friendships with my fellow trainees and are excited that they are part of my professional network as we continue to develop our respective careers.

Why did you decide to stay with Jebsen Industrial after the trainee programme?

I am really excited about a permanent placement with Jebsen Industrial. Having been immersed in the Jebsen corporate culture for two years, I believe that I share a similar mindset and perspective. Jebsen Industrial also values its people. In particular, I like how the company encourages its people to take ownership of their careers while providing plenty of career progression and professional development opportunities. As someone whose career is just beginning, this is a very motivating environment to work in. Colleagues are friendly and the working environment is very open and welcoming too.

How do you feel about your current role?

IAs an E-Commerce Executive, my primary responsibility is to assist in the establishment and management of Specialty Ingredients & Solutions’ online stores. In addition, I am in-charge of online promotional activities and have been tasked to enhance the online channels for Weiwanjia, our first in-house brand. From a big-picture perspective, e-commerce is positioned to be an area of strategic growth for the division. This is a new area for both the division and myself, so the work is quite challenging but I am excited to be part of such an important initiative. Every day is filled with learning as I often work closely with vendors and seek guidance from more experienced colleagues. I am also keeping tabs on the latest developments in the e-commerce industry. As the division is very receptive to new ideas and new approaches, I get to be creative and innovative in my work too.

Any advice for future Jebsen Trainees?

Be humble, open-minded and have a goal. Think about the gap between where you are and where you want to be, and let that guide your actions.
